Rent a 20ft or 40ft Refrigerated Container

Refrigerated containers for rent give you cold storage that arrives on a truck and works on your own site. A refrigerated container, also called a reefer, is an insulated steel container with a built-in refrigeration unit at one end. It holds a set temperature anywhere from -13°F to +77°F, which covers chilled produce at one end and frozen stock at the other.

Month-to-Month Terms from Five Owned Yards

CMG rents refrigerator containers at 20ft and 40ft high cube. Rentals run month to month with no minimum period, and delivery lands inside 48 to 72 hours from the nearest of five CMG-owned yards.

The unit needs a power supply on site before it can hold temperature, and CMG quotes a generator set separately where the address has no fixed three-phase supply.

Refrigerated Container for Rent: Dimensions and Temperature Range

A refrigerated container holds less than a dry container of the same size. The 20ft gives 999 cubic feet against 1,170, and the 40ft high cube gives 2,377 against 2,690. The table below is the standard specification for a refrigerated container in both sizes:

Specification20ft refrigerated40ft high cube refrigerated

Insulation and the refrigeration machinery take the difference, and interior height at 20ft drops by about five inches. The floor is T-section aluminium rather than plywood, because air has to circulate underneath the load to hold an even temperature.

What Power Supply a Refrigerated Container Needs

The refrigeration unit runs continuously and draws a three-phase supply, typically 380 to 460V at 50 or 60 Hz. Check the site before the delivery date rather than on the day.

Three-Phase Supply on Site

A continuous three-phase supply at the placement position, not a standard outlet.

  • 380 to 460V, three phase, at 50 or 60 Hz
  • A dedicated circuit sized for the unit, with the correct receptacle fitted

Runs continuously

Cable Run and Placement

The supply has to reach the unit where it stands, not where the truck stops.

  • Cable routing that keeps the run clear of traffic and standing water
  • Placement position agreed before the delivery date rather than on the day

Checked before delivery

If the Supply Drops

A loaded unit holds temperature for a while after a power cut, but not indefinitely.

  • A plan for an interruption overnight or at a weekend, when the clock is shorter in summer heat
  • A generator set where the site has no fixed three-phase supply

Generator quoted separately

Tell CMG what supply the site has when you request the quote, because it changes what will work at the address.

Chilled or Frozen: What You Can Store

One unit covers the whole range rather than only the cold end. The setpoint decides whether it runs as a chiller or a freezer, so the same container serves both jobs on different weeks.

LoadRuns asTypical job
Fresh produce, dairy and floral stockChillerHeld chilled through a seasonal peak
Seafood, meat and prepared foodFreezerHeld frozen at the bottom of the range
Catering and event overflowChiller or freezerWhere the kitchen runs out of cold storage
Restaurant, grocery and pharmacy stockChiller or freezerDuring a refit or an equipment failure
Cold-chain contingencyChiller or freezerAfter a storm or an outage, held on site rather than trucked away

Loading a refrigerated container

  • Keep the load clear of the walls and off the end bulkhead so air can circulate around it
  • Load stock at or near its target temperature, because the unit holds a temperature it is given rather than pulling a warm load down quickly
  • Leave the floor grating clear, since air moves under the load through the T-section aluminium floor

Loading from above rather than through the doors is an open top container rental job, not a refrigerated one.

20ft and 40ft Refrigerated Rental Rates

CMG publishes two refrigerated rental rates. Both are the highest monthly rates in the CMG rental fleet, and both buy a working refrigeration unit rather than a passive insulated box.

Container typeMonthly rateCapacityBest for
20ft refrigeratedFrom $1,500999 cu ftTemperature-controlled space on a compact footprint
40ft high cube refrigeratedFrom $1,5002,377 cu ftMore than double the capacity for the same published rate

Both rates run month to month with no minimum period, with pickup included and delivery priced by distance from the nearest CMG yard. Power supply on site is the renter’s responsibility unless CMG quotes a generator separately. You can also view all rental container rates.

Refrigerated Container Rental FAQs

A refrigerated container holds a setpoint anywhere from -13°F to +77°F. That single range covers chilled produce at one end and frozen stock at the other.

CMG refrigerated rentals start at $1,500 a month for both the 20ft and the 40ft high cube. Pickup is included and delivery is priced by distance.

A continuous three-phase supply, typically 380 to 460V at 50 or 60 Hz. A standard outlet will not run the unit, and sites without three phase usually use a generator.

Yes. The same unit runs as a chiller or a freezer depending on the setpoint, so one container covers both jobs without swapping equipment.

A 20ft holds 999 cubic feet and a 40ft high cube holds 2,377. Both hold less than a dry container of the same size, because insulation and machinery take the space.

CMG rents refrigerated containers month to month with no minimum period. Rentals run from a single seasonal peak to several years and end when you request pickup.
